OGanisian Wrestling System

Spartak Baumanskaia

is a legacy wrestling club in Moscow, and closed now. It was an alma mater to a flock of premium wrestlers and friends

Both Sanasar Oganisian and Ovanes Oganisian are former Spartak wrestlers

This part of the website is dedicated to very old and precious friends and coaches

Spartak Moscow Club History
  • In 1954, the first sports club of freestyle wrestling was opened in Moscow and received a name of "Spartak". And first coach of the club was Evgeny Dorodnov and folowed by Zaya Benjaminov, Gennady Titov, Thomas Barba, Hamza Abubyakirov, Hanen Fomin, Mikhail Gritsuk, Alimbek Tsaraev, Mikhail Maximchenko, Alexey Niazbaev, Petr Pashkov, Shafula Nevretdinov. The first star wrestlers (masters of sports of the USSR) was a 1958 champions of Moscow as Vladimir Arkhipov followed by Levin Felika and the medalist of the USSR championship, champion of the All-Union Council "Spartak" Yuri Obukhovsky.
  • Another club pupil Vladimir Meshcheryakov became a champion of the USSR Armed Forces and he defeated the Olympic champion Mirian Tsalkalamanidze in the finals. One of the strongest heavyweights of the USSR, Mikhail Gerasimov, a legendary circus wrestler after completing his amateur career, a multiple winner of the USSR championship, moved from the Dynamo FW club to Spartak on Baumanskaia.
  • Spatak wrestlers were dominant in Moscow. Among them were a heavyweight Nanyakov Evgeniy - 10-time champion of Moscow, champion All Russia "Spartak", winner of many international tournaments, champion of Russia in sambo.
  • Zhuruli Nugzar - three-time champion of the USSR, Akoev Felix - two-time champion of the USSR The winners of the USSR championship were: Grunichev Viktor, Elkanov Ruslan, Sokaev Tamur, Maksimchenko Mikhail, Gagiev Mikhail, Gerasimov Mikhail, Savelyev Vasily (multiple champion of the Moscow).
  • On a curious note Russian famous conductor Valery Gergiev and his brothers also wrestled for the club.
  • The first top results on the international arena was achieved by the Rushan Ingeldiev, the winner of the European championship, multiple prize-winner of the USSR championship.
  • The 1978 World championship winner Anatoly Prokopchuk was also a pupil of Spartak before he moved to Dynamo.
  • So did Vorobiev brothers Vladimir and Yury, who also moved from Spartak to Dynamo with coach Barba. Yury was second in 1982 WC losing to Lee Kemp, and he won European C and took gold on junior world in 1979. Vladimir was wrestling on a national level.
  • The all time star of Spartak was Sanasar Oganisyan Sanasar - Olympic champion - 80, World champion in 81 , European champion 81 and 86 and he was 81 and 89 USSR champion. Sanasar’s younger brother Ovanes Oganisian wrestled on a national level but moved to the US where he wrestled one season for University of Nebraska. Gor Chakhal (Oganisian) a famous Russian artist and a key Oganisian brother also wrestled for youth Spartak team.
  • Among others the key athletes for the club in the 80-s and 90’s were Valery Mashkov, Andrei Korchuganov, Alexey Yakovlev, Mikhail Kosov, Dmitry Klyauzov, Andrey and Alexey Morkovin, Alexander Isaev, Alexey Bespalov, Vladimir Ruban, Nikolay Slobodchikov, Sergei Grigoriev, Alexey Alexeev and plenty of others.
  • Spartak wrestlers style was characterized by amazing technique capabilities taught by their coaches in countless hours of technique studies. They avoided using any physical strength. Watching Spartak wrestlers sometimes it looked like winning was less important than showing the good technique (that’s not true of course).
  • The club was situated in an old Russian Staroobriad (who were the old orthodox pre Peter the Great) Church which was closed for service during Soviet times. The size of the wrestling mat 12m by 12m is difficult to fit into a regular gym, so the church dome was ideal for the mat. In 2017 or so the church was finally returned to the Russian old orthdox by Vladimir Putin’s decree and the club was closed.
